Our trip to New Zealand's South Island Jan 2007

Franz Josef Glacier and the Marlborough Wine region

The first climb up. Phew!

The ice is blue because the

ice particles are crushed so much

that the higher frequency light

wavelenghts are reflected back first.

The glacier is dirty due to

a blockage occuring in the

water outflow from under

the glacier that builds up

a pressure that explodes

through the glacier sending

a shower of rock and dirt

all over it.

Franz Josef glacier is one of only

3 glaciers in the world that are

actually growing!

One of the others

is also in NZ!
